Why You May Experience Difficulty In Operating Your Residential Garage Door

As a homeowner, you are responsible for keeping your home in tip-top shape. If something is wrong with it, you should identify and fix problems sooner rather than later.

Your garage door is one of the components of your home that you do not want to fail. Yet, it comprises various components that can become damaged or worn out due to regular use, resulting in door operation issues. When the door malfunctions, you may not go in and out of your garage door at will.

Here are some common reasons your residential garage door might fail to open or close in times of need.

Dirty Photo Eyes

If the photoelectric sensors near your garage floor become dirty or moisture-laden, they will not transmit any communication to open or close your garage door. Instead, the sensors will detect obstruction of the light beam, thus preventing the garage door from closing entirely.

If your garage door does not close due to a buildup of dirt or moisture on the photo eyes, you may use a clean, non-abrasive dry cloth and a mild cleanser to wipe off the contaminants.

Broken Springs

Garage doors are large and heavy objects. Without some counterbalance, it would be hard to operate them safely. This is where garage door springs come in.

Torsion and extension springs are the two main spring varieties used in the installation and operation of garage doors. Both types of springs create a counterbalancing effect during garage door operation, although not in the same way.

While extension springs provide a counterbalance by expanding and stretching out when opening the door, their torsion cousins will slowly twist and wound around a shaft positioned above the garage door opening. If the springs on your garage door snap, the door will lack the counterbalance needed to open it. As a result, you will end up with a malfunctioning garage door.

Broken garage door springs may require replacement. However, be sure to choose springs that are compatible with your door.

Misaligned Tracks

All moving components of a garage door require correct alignment to facilitate smooth door operation. If the rollers are off-track, the door won't operate as it should. The usual culprit behind this issue is bent or damaged tracks.

You can fix the issue by straightening or replacing the tracks.

Garage door issues require professional handling to repair safely, quickly, and effectively. Contact a garage door repair professional for your quote.
